Some non-stick pans can go in the dishwasher, but only if the manufacturer says so, and even then most advise against it. Which? recommends washing non-stick pans by hand because the dishwasher can wear down the coating over time, and Tefal recommends hand washing even for pans it sells as dishwasher safe. Ceramic-coated and cast iron pans should stay out of the dishwasher altogether.
Key points
- "Dishwasher safe" means the manufacturer allows it, not that it is the best way to clean the pan.
- Dishwasher salt, detergent and knocks against other items can slowly damage a non-stick coating, according to Which? and Stiftung Warentest.
- Ceramic-coated pans, cast iron and carbon steel: hand wash only. Stainless steel usually copes, but can spot or pit.
- Your pan's instructions always take priority over general rules for its material.
This article expands on one part of our guide on why food sticks to a pan: what the dishwasher does to each type of frying pan.
Can non-stick pans go in the dishwasher?
Many can, on paper. Which? notes that most modern pans claim to be dishwasher safe, and defines the label simply: the manufacturer thinks the pan can be washed in a dishwasher without being damaged. Its advice is still to wash pans by hand if you can.
Tefal's own instructions make the point clearly. For its Unlimited On wok pan, a product listed as dishwasher safe, Tefal writes that it recommends hand washing only to extend the life of the product. If you do use the dishwasher, it asks for a gentle liquid, gel or powder detergent rather than tablets or sachets.

Why the dishwasher is hard on non-stick coatings
- Detergent and salt. Which? says dishwasher salt and detergent, combined with high-pressure water, can slowly damage a non-stick coating. The German cookware maker Fissler goes further, saying harsh dishwasher tablets attack the surface chemically and make it brittle.
- Knocks. Pans take up a lot of room and can bang against other items, and the coating suffers, according to the German testing organisation Stiftung Warentest.
- Dull, discoloured parts. Tefal warns that some parts can become dulled and discoloured by corrosive detergents, and that its guarantee does not cover this type of wear.
Tefal also advises re-coating the non-stick interior with a little cooking oil after each dishwasher wash, to stop the coating drying out. If yours already sticks, our article on a non-stick pan sticking explains how to tell residue from a worn coating.
Which pans can go in the dishwasher? Material by material
| Material | Dishwasher? | What the sources advise |
|---|---|---|
| PTFE non-stick | Often allowed, not recommended | Hand wash (Which?, Tefal) |
| Ceramic non-stick | No | Hand washing is necessary (Verbraucherzentrale) |
| Cast iron | No | Removes the seasoning and likely causes rust (Lodge, Which?) |
| Carbon steel | No | Wipe out and re-oil after use (Verbraucherzentrale) |
| Stainless steel | Usually, if labelled dishwasher safe | Hand wash day to day; remove and dry promptly (Which?, WMF) |
| Uncoated aluminium | No | Tarnishes; anodised aluminium is fine (Which?) |
| Wooden handles | No | Wood can splinter and split (Which?) |
| Titanium cooking surface | Check the manufacturer | Follow the instructions; hand washing is the gentler option |
Ceramic pans
Germany's consumer advice centre, the Verbraucherzentrale, is blunt: ceramic-coated pans need washing by hand, because the dishwasher destroys the non-stick effect. Fissler adds that a ceramic pan loses its shine and its performance in the dishwasher. If a coating is already flaking, our article on a scratched non-stick pan covers what that means for your health.

Cast iron and carbon steel
On these pans the seasoning, a layer of baked-on oil, protects against rust. Lodge, the American cast iron maker, says a dishwasher will remove the seasoning and likely cause rust, and Which? gives the same warning. For carbon steel pans, the Verbraucherzentrale recommends simply wiping them out after use and giving them a fresh coat of oil.
Stainless steel
Which? says stainless steel pans can usually go in the dishwasher, but only if the manufacturer labels them dishwasher safe. Repeated machine washing can leave water spots or streaks, and long exposure to harsh detergent or salt can cause pitting or corrosion. WMF's instructions for its stainless steel pans add two practical points: spilt dishwasher salt can cause corrosion, and pans left damp in the machine can stain.
Aluminium and wooden handles
Which? says ordinary aluminium tarnishes in the dishwasher, while anodised aluminium is fine thanks to its protective oxide layer. Wood should stay out, as the heat can make it splinter and split. For plastic or Bakelite handles, check the instructions: Tefal tells owners of some of its pans to hand wash special handles only.
What "dishwasher safe" means, and what it doesn't
There is a European standard, EN 12875, that sets out how to test whether kitchen items withstand machine washing. According to HEA, a German association for household energy use, items tested this way can carry a symbol stating the maximum number of cycles they survived, between 125 and 1,000.
- It is a permission, not a recommendation. Tefal still recommends hand washing for pans it describes as dishwasher safe.
- It does not cover cosmetic wear. Dulling and discolouration from detergents fall outside Tefal's guarantee.
- It says nothing about how long the non-stick lasts. For typical lifespans and what shortens them, see how long a frying pan lasts.
- It applies model by model. Two pans from the same brand can have different instructions.
How to put a pan in the dishwasher with less damage
If the instructions allow it, these steps limit the wear:
- Let it cool first. Tefal warns that sudden changes of temperature may cause the metal to warp.
- Deal with burnt-on food first. Our guide on how to clean a burnt pan covers soaking and bicarbonate of soda.
- Give it space. Load it where it cannot knock against other items.
- Use a gentle detergent. Tefal suggests liquid, gel or powder, not tablets or sachets.
- Unload promptly. WMF advises opening the door soon after the cycle and not leaving cookware damp inside.
- Dry, then oil the coating lightly, as Tefal recommends after dishwasher use.

What about uncoated pans?
Without a non-stick layer, there is no coating for detergent to attack; what remains depends on the metal. A titanium cooking surface is uncoated too, but it is still the manufacturer who decides whether a pan can go in the dishwasher. For the Untitan pan: titanium cooking surface, uncoated, PFAS-free, Untitan says it can go in the dishwasher. We know of no independent test measuring what many dishwasher cycles do to a titanium surface over time. The editors of the German F.A.Z. Kaufkompass consider that washing by hand without harsh detergents clearly extends the life of any pan, so hand washing remains the gentler option. To be fair about the limits: like stainless steel, titanium needs preheating and a little fat, and the pan costs more than an entry-level non-stick one. Full care advice is in our guide to titanium pan care.
Frequently asked questions
Is it bad to put non-stick pans in the dishwasher?
It is allowed if the manufacturer says so, but Which? warns the dishwasher can wear the coating down over time. Which? and Tefal both recommend washing non-stick pans by hand.
Why has my pan gone dull or dark after the dishwasher?
Tefal says corrosive detergents can dull and discolour some parts of a pan. It recommends gentle liquid or gel detergents rather than tablets.
Are dishwasher safe non-stick pans worth it?
The label is convenient, but it does not change the advice: Tefal recommends hand washing even for its dishwasher safe pans.
Can Tefal pans go in the dishwasher?
Some can; check the product's instructions. Where Tefal allows it, it still recommends hand washing and re-oiling the coating after a dishwasher wash.
