Can you re-coat a non-stick pan? Costs and options

Why a non-stick coating can't be redone at home, how professional re-coating works, what little is on offer for UK home cooks and when a new or uncoated pan makes more sense.

You can't re-coat a non-stick pan at home, but workshops can: they blast off the old coating, apply a new one and bake it at high temperature. In the UK, the services we could verify are aimed at commercial bakeware; the workshop we found that takes domestic pans of any brand is in Germany.

Key points

  • Tefal says its non-stick coating has to be applied during manufacture, so it can't be redone at home.
  • Professional re-coating means stripping, grit blasting, new layers of coating and curing in an oven.
  • UK refurbishment services we found are aimed at bakeries and industrial kitchens, not home cooks.
  • A new PTFE coating is still PTFE, which belongs to the PFAS family.

First check the coating is really worn, not just coated in baked-on grease: see non-stick pan sticking: can you get the non-stick back?

Can you re-coat a non-stick pan yourself?

No. Tefal says the coating must be applied during the initial manufacturing process. Workshops describe grit blasting, several layers and curing at up to 420 °C, none of which is possible in a home kitchen.

As for sprays that claim to restore a worn surface, we found no independent testing showing a lasting effect, so we don't recommend them.

Staged scene: once the coating flakes off, no home remedy will bring it back. The choice is then re-coating or replacing the pan.

How does professional re-coating work?

ITN Coatings, a German workshop that re-coats pans for households, restaurants and businesses, lists these steps: cleaning, thermal pre-treatment, blasting the cooking surface, applying the non-stick coating in several layers, sintering, then straightening and polishing where needed. It says pans reach temperatures of up to 420 °C during the process.

Plastic and wooden handles have to come off. ITN excludes any guarantee on warped items because of the blasting and heat treatment, and warns that stainless steel may turn slightly golden.

Where can you get a pan re-coated in the UK?

Options are limited. Details below come from providers' own websites (checked 16 September 2026); this is not a recommendation or a complete list.

ProviderWhat it takesWhat it says
AFT Fluorotec (Welwyn Garden City)Industrial and commercial bakewareStrips old coatings, applies a new non-stick coating and straightens pans; quotes on request
American Pan UKCommercial bakewareCleans, straightens and recoats pans; recoating of its DuraShield coating is offered in the UK
ITN Coatings (Germany)Domestic and commercial pans of any brand; PTFE, PEEK or sol-gel ceramicFrom €34.90 for an aluminium pan; ships worldwide, with prior agreement outside the EU; around 14 days once received

Sending a pan to Germany means postage both ways and a wait, so compare the total with the price of a new pan. It is also worth asking your pan's manufacturer.

Re-coat, buy a new non-stick pan or go uncoated?

Before accepting a quote, ask which coating and how many layers, how long it takes, what the guarantee covers and the total cost including postage.

On the environmental side, re-coating extends the life of the pan body, but a new PTFE coating is still PTFE, a member of the PFAS family. Germany's Stiftung Warentest no longer includes PTFE pans in its tests because PFAS can be released into the environment during their production and disposal. Switching to an uncoated pan

Stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel and titanium have no coating to re-do. Cast iron and carbon steel need seasoning, stainless steel careful preheating; our guide to uncoated frying pans compares them.

A hammered titanium cooking surface: bare metal, with no coating to re-apply.

Titanium conducts heat much like stainless steel, so it needs preheating and a little fat. See our honest guide to titanium frying pans. One option is the Untitan pan: titanium cooking surface, uncoated, PFAS-free, with a stainless steel base that works on every hob, including induction, in 26, 28 and 30 cm. It costs more than an entry-level non-stick pan; the hammered surface, well preheated with a little fat, helps food release. You can try it for 30 days.

A steak goes into the preheated pan on a gas hob: without a coating, preheating is the key step.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a non-stick pan non-stick again?

Clean off baked-on residue first. If food still sticks with preheating and a little fat, the coating is worn.

Can Tefal pans be re-coated?

Tefal says not. ITN in Germany says it accepts any brand.

Is a re-coated pan PFAS-free?

Only if you choose a PFAS-free coating, such as a ceramic one, where the workshop offers it. A new PTFE coating is still a PFAS.
