To care for a titanium pan day to day, wash it with hot water, a little washing-up liquid and a non-scratch sponge; loosen stuck-on food by soaking, deglazing or using a bicarbonate of soda paste. Rainbow-like discolouration usually comes from overheating and may only partly come off, so preventing it matters more than scrubbing. Whether the pan can go in the dishwasher is for the manufacturer to say.
Key points
- Before first use, wash and dry the pan. Seasoning is not essential; follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Preheat over a medium heat with a little fat: it helps prevent burnt-on food.
- Discolouration is a change in the oxide layer; in a German newspaper's test it only partly came off.
- Untitan says its pan is dishwasher-safe; washing by hand is the gentler option.
We have found no care advice for uncoated titanium from Which? or any other consumer organisation. This guide separates what is established, what manufacturers say and what nobody really knows. If food is sticking in the first place, start with our guide on why food sticks to a pan.
Titanium pan first use
- Remove all packaging, stickers and labels.
- Wash the pan in hot water with a little washing-up liquid and a soft sponge.
- Rinse, then dry it straight away with a tea towel to avoid water marks.
Does it need seasoning? Seasoning a titanium pan is not essential, and we found no independent source that recommends it. Follow the manufacturer's instructions; the Untitan pan does not require seasoning. Preheating with a little fat makes more difference. Our guide on how to season a pan explains which materials really need it.
Everyday use: preheat well, clean less
Good care starts on the hob. Titanium conducts heat about as poorly as stainless steel, and metal that is not hot enough holds on to proteins and starches.
- Medium heat: preheat for a few minutes rather than starting on full power.
- Check the temperature with the water droplet test: when a drop beads up and glides instead of fizzing away, the pan is ready.
- A little fat, then the food.
- Never leave an empty pan on a hot hob: overheating is what causes discolouration (see below).
How to clean a titanium pan every day
- Let it cool a little. Tefal warns against putting a hot pan into cold water, which can warp it.
- Clean it the same day: dried-on food is harder to shift.
- Hot water, washing-up liquid and a non-scratch sponge are usually all you need.
- Rinse and dry to avoid limescale marks.

How to clean a burnt titanium pan
If food has burnt on, treat it as you would stainless steel, starting gently:
- Deglaze: straight after cooking, pour a splash of hot water into the still-warm pan and lift the residue with a spatula.
- Soak or simmer: hot soapy water, or a few minutes of simmering water in the pan.
- Bicarbonate of soda paste: mix with a little water, leave it to work, then wipe off with a soft sponge.
Avoid unless the manufacturer allows it: bleach, chlorine-based cleaners and oven cleaner. Tefal describes them as highly corrosive to stainless steel, and a pan with a titanium surface may contain stainless steel too: according to its maker, the one tested by F.A.Z. Kaufkompass did. For material-by-material methods, see how to clean a burnt pan.
Titanium pan discoloration: why the rainbow tints?
First, tell the two kinds of mark apart. A dark, raised crust is burnt food or fat, and comes off with the steps above. Smooth, coloured tints in the metal itself are discolouration of the surface.
Titanium is protected by a very thin, tightly bonded oxide layer, which is why the Council of Europe's technical guide (EDQM, 2024) considers it practically inert. At high temperatures this oxide layer grows thicker (Gemelli and Camargo, 2007). The colour of thin oxide layers on titanium comes from light interference and depends on their thickness (Diamanti et al., 2008), so iridescent tints can appear.
What partly worked in a test
F.A.Z. Kaufkompass, the consumer section of the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, let its uncoated titanium pan get too hot for a short time with a little oil in it. Discolouration formed in the textured surface and around the rim and was hard to shift: oven cleaner spray and a little steel wool only partly removed it. Both are harsh, so only use them if your pan's manufacturer permits it.
What we do not know
We found no source giving a reliable temperature at which a titanium pan starts to discolour in a home kitchen, and we know of no study assessing this kind of discolouration from a health point of view. It is a change in the oxide layer, not a coating flaking off. The best prevention is not heating the pan empty on full power. The other trade-offs of titanium are covered in titanium cookware pros and cons.
Can titanium pans go in the dishwasher?
It depends on the pan, and the word “titanium” tells you little: two of the three “titanium pans” in the F.A.Z. Kaufkompass test had a PTFE non-stick coating. Check your pan's instructions.
For the Untitan pan: titanium cooking surface, uncoated, PFAS-free, Untitan says it can go in the dishwasher. We know of no independent test measuring what many dishwasher cycles do to a titanium surface over time. The F.A.Z. Kaufkompass team takes the view that washing by hand, without harsh cleaners, extends the life of any pan. Since everyday cleaning only needs hot water and a sponge, washing by hand remains the gentler option.

Utensils and storage
Utensils: in the F.A.Z. Kaufkompass test, the uncoated titanium surface coped with metal cutlery, and the testers even cut meat in the pan. Bare metal can still show signs of use, so choose wooden or silicone utensils if you want to keep the surface looking its best.
Storage: put the pan away completely dry. If you stack pans, place a tea towel or kitchen roll between them so the base of one does not mark the surface of another.
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean a titanium frying pan?
Let it cool a little, wash it with hot water, washing-up liquid and a non-scratch sponge, then dry it. For stuck-on food, soak, deglaze or use a bicarbonate of soda paste.
Why has my titanium pan changed colour?
Usually because it got too hot, empty or nearly empty. The protective oxide layer thickens and shows coloured tints. Preheating over a medium heat helps prevent it.
Can you use steel wool on a titanium pan?
F.A.Z. Kaufkompass used a little to reduce discolouration. It is not needed for everyday cleaning; only use it if your manufacturer allows it.
